The Harold O. McKell Scholarship Fund Print E-mail

This fund, started in 1989 by the Association, has allowed students of Caribbean heritage in the greater Washington DC area attending or planning to attend college to pursue their goals of attaining a higher education. Founded as the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Washington DC Scholarship Fund, its initial focus was on students of Trinidad and Tobago birth and heritage. In 2000, recognizing the evolution of the organization and the support it receives throughout the diaspora.  In 2007 the scholarship fund was renamed in honor long serving member Harold O. Mckell.

  •   Scholarship Objectives
    The Trinidad and Tobago Association of Washington, DC has always played a positive and active role in the Washington DC Metropolitan area and has participated in events in other states. The Scholarship Program is its way of contributing to the education of this community's youth. This worthwhile endeavor provides monetary assistance to undergraduate students of Caribbean heritage. Implicit in this action is the increased enrollment of Caribbean students into the tertiary education system of the United States, with all of its perceived advantages.

  •   Eligible Candidates
    To be considered for the scholarship, the applicant must meet ALL of the following selection criteria:

      • Must be of Caribbean descent. This is defined as either being born in or having parents born in any of the island territories of the Caribbean Sea including the Bahamas and Bermuda, and the mainland territories of Central and South America associated with Britain (Belize and Guyana), Holland (Suriname) and France (French Guiana);

      • A current high school senior planning to enroll as a full-time student or currently a full-time student in an accredited two or four year college or university in the United States.;

      • Legally reside in the Washington DC Metropolitan area;

      • Possess at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale;

      • Must be able to demonstrate financial need, and;

      • Not be a previous recipient.

  •   How to Apply
    Three awards are offered annually. Eligible students may apply by sending the completed application form (dowloadable from this site, or available on request from the Program) along with a personal essay, and high school transcripts to:

    The Program accepts applications from January 1 - May 30, each year. Applications must be postmarked by May 30, to be considered. Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Scholarship Selection Committee based on the above criteria. All applicants will be notified in writing by July 1. The scholarship money will be forwarded directly to the college or university of the recipient's choice. The Program celebrates the winners at an annual Scholarship Fund Banquet.
